January

After New Years Eve celebrations at Brendon's we returned to show Tomo the train.

An old photo of the house as it was about 60 years ago.

At the bottom. The temporary wooden supports have since been replaced by soil and the track extended a little.

At the top. The high bridge has yet to be completely restored.

Test run at Narara.

The swamp trestle is still closed for repairs so this is as far as we could get along the main line. (There are still two other complete circuits available for public running days.)

Robert practice driving his new engine.

Back for improvement, but still able to drag some kids around the garden.

Meanwhile, here's another load of soil to fill in some low spots. Any remaining at the bottom will fill the lowest embankment. This can all be done Ffestiniog style: just by gravity.

Pip, one our taller visitors, was able to reach up high enough to get a rope on the tree to encourage it to grow straight again. (it was straight until last year when the weight of creeper pulled it down towards the bridge deck.)

Temporary track into the cutting - nearly enough fill to widen the enbankment enough to lay new track.

If you have seen one brush tail possum you have seen them all, unless it's on the way to the shallow space between the ceiling and the flat roof.

Driving car end just painted.

The solar panels are off and the electronic controls are being improved, so this is a test run with one of our "get you home" relay controllers.

February

Our "speeder". Bought rather than built, it came with a petrol engine which is about as easy to start as the average two-stroke pocket bike engine, which it is. Anyone want to buy it?

View of the bottom end.

Ready to descend after a hard day's bush regeneration: pruning lantana to get to the base, then cutting and painting, etc.

Next time we won't use our ex-Canada Bay recycling crate, it doesn't mate with superseded Willoughby or Sutherland crates.

Ready for the next lantana-fighting session.

Easter

Kumiko, Yuhei, and Tilly came for a holiday but did not escape a little work on fencing the high bridge. There had been some rain earlier in the week so our guests got to meet some our wildlife really close.

A quick driving lesson before starting on the bridge fence.

Which one of us brought this fellow home?

Good progress - now to pack up and replace the barrier.

It was dry when we set out by train and foot for the top of the hill.

The macrozamias don't fruit every year but this year several did.

July

Aiko and her friend Norika, both from Nagoya, came for a ride after an introduction to miniature railways at Narara where they volunteered to collect tickets and inspect the shoes of prospective riders for safety.

September

Moeko encounters a leech. Visit to Narara. Natsumi in the tire. Student tram drivers.

Do-It-Yourself Page

Every so often a visitor comments that they would also like to play trains in their own backyard. Here is a paper that offers some suggestions. The idea is that it should be more general than simple instructions on how we built our garden line. It is still a work in progress and will be revised from time to time. Needless to say, your suggestions and comments are welcome. Do-it-yourself Home Railways – Getting Started (opens in new window).

The Hillside Bridge

We just found this video on a stick that Robert gave us a while ago. It shows John's heavy passenger car that normally runs at Russell's Ridge. We also see the "temporary" bridge built to get the track past a tree that happened to be on the inclined contour that the line follows elsewhere. Eventually we shall cut a bench behind the tree or fill in the bridge - any volunteers?
