Jervis Bay Marine Park
Jervis Bay Marine Park was declared in 1998 and is 21 450 hectares in size and just 200km south of Sydney.
Jervis Bay Marine Park is home to a myriad of marine species of both tropical and temperate origin and offers excellent examples of southern marine habitats. Bordered by two National parks the area is free from many of the land-based impacts present along much of the NSW coast.
The Marine Park Authority of NSW (http://www.mpa.nsw.gov.au/) has prepared a Draft Zoning Plan for the Jervis Bay Marine Park that was released for public comment from October 2001 to the end of January 2002. Below are some of the recommendations that NPA proposed.
NPAs believes that majority of the Jervis Bay Marine Park should be placed in marine sanctuaries and should include:
Of particular significance are habitats that are important to the Critically Endangered Grey Nurse Shark (see weblink for further information on the grey nurse shark). As a result NPA believes that all areas where the grey nurse sharks are found be protected in marine sanctuaries. Additionally, the foraging areas and feed species of the grey nurse shark must also be protected.
